A storyteller with a camera
Fabio Sommer is not primarily a photographer, nor primarily a novelist. He is a storyteller who sometimes uses a camera and sometimes uses words.
The photographs come from the Norwegian coast and the far north: the sea in every kind of weather, boathouses in morning fog, northern lights over a quiet harbour, sheep on a rock. And people, often without looking into the camera. The aim is never to collect images, but to discover moments. An image may be enhanced, but it must remain believable.
Some moments need more than a photograph. That is where the Observations come in: short reflections, sometimes long afterthoughts, one photograph and one observation at a time.
And some stories become too long for a single image. Dansen i Firenze began as one such story. It became a novel about love as fantasy and love as action, and about power, in the Medici’s Florence and in an ordinary Norwegian home.
This is not a portfolio. It is a world. You are welcome to stay a while.
Some photographs need words. Some words need photographs.
